Jeffrey M. Vincent, PhD

I am an experienced policy-focused research professional, looking for practical solutions to challenging problems. My work advances social equity, healthy communities, and climate resilience.

My research is used to inform collaborative
policy at multiple levels of government that is
principle-driven and provides transparency,
fairness, and accountability.

About My Work

I have written extensively on a variety of issues, including school siting and design, housing redevelopment, state school construction policies, joint use of schools, youth engagement in redevelopment, refugee resettlement, and transit-oriented development aimed at families. My research and policy writing has been published in peer-reviewed and practitioner-oriented journals, books, and other outlets.

I believe that finding answers to the difficult public policy questions requires new modes of scholarship, particularly those that draw knowledge from multiple disciplines and use multiple methods/approaches to aid understanding. I conduct “engaged scholarship,” done for and in partnership with public agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Planning Just and Joyful Cities With & For Young People

UC Berkeley’s Center for Cities + Schools is an interdisciplinary, action-
research center, linking the fields of city planning and K-12 education. We advance policies and practices that create opportunity-rich environments,
both in and out of schools, so that young people of all backgrounds can thrive.

We believe that ALL children should attend healthy, safe, and educationally appropriate school facilities. It’s BASIC.

(BASIC) is a non-partisan coalition of civic, public sector, labor, and industry
associations who support federal funding to help under-served public
school districts modernize and build K-12 public school facilities. BASIC was formed in late 2016 under the leadership of the 21st Century School Fund, the National Council on School Facilities, the Center for Cities + Schools at UC Berkeley, and the Center for Green Schools @ USGBC.
